In a turn of events, every hotel we have stayed in since leaving the Westerdam has had superb accessibility features. The metrosexual Hotel Modera in Portland was very high-tech and its accessible shower was a joy to look at and to use. But the La Quinta at Alton Baker Park in Eugene, the Fairfield in Redding, California, and our current hotel, Yosemite Westgate Lodge, all have had functional roll-in showers. Here in Yosemite, we noticed that the floor was absurdly slippery. Why? Jim the builder identified the problem. The tile on the floor was wall-tile with a high-gloss glazing. So, with the exception of the slippery floor here in Yosemite, all of our lodging has been wonderfully equipped. There is hope.
In a related note, I have failed to mention that in almost 3 weeks of constant travel we have been served by uniformly wonderful, caring and conscientious waiters and waitresses. Without fail, these good folks have addressed Jim directly, leaned in close to listen, and have said things like, "I am sorry, I am just not hearing you..." whenever Jim has been unclear. (With Jim, Ernie and I have a more highly evolved and sensitive communication tool: "Speak english!") Last night we found the exception to the rule. At the Buck Meadows Restaurant and Lodge, our waiter never looked at Jim but asked either Ernie or me, "What does he want?"
"What does he want?" Joe, I laughed out loud.
